FAQ’s

How do I know if I am a candidate for rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgery designed to change the shape of the nose and is one of the most common of all cosmetic surgeries. If you are unhappy with how your nose looks, this nose surgery procedure can reduce or increase the size of your nose as indicated, change the shape of the bridge or tip, alter the nostrils, or modify the nose angle. Whether you are not satisfied with your nose due to injury or a birth defect, or if you are experiencing breathing problems, please contact our rhinoplasty experts in Northern California to receive information about your particular case.

Do I have to be of a certain age to be a candidate for surgery? What if I have permission from my parents, but I am under 18?

We require that all patients who are under 18 years of age obtain parental consent and be accompanied by a parent at the consultation.

When can I schedule my rhinoplasty consultation with Dr. Owsley?

Dr. Owsley is available for consultation appointments on Thursdays. Please call our office to arrange the best time.

Will I be charged a consultation fee?

Our office policy requires that a consultation fee of $200 be paid upon scheduling your consultation. If Dr. Owsley determines that you are a candidate for rhinoplasty and you schedule a surgery, your fee will be applied towards it.

Do you offer financing?

Dr. Owsley's office offers financing through Capital One Healthcare® Fincaning.

What is the cost for rhinoplasty?

The cost will depend on the complexity of your case. Dr. Owsley and his staff will be able to provide you with an exact quote at the time of your consultation.

What are the different types of rhinoplasty?

There are two main types of rhinoplasty. One type, called closed rhinoplasty, involves the surgeon making incisions inside the nose, which minimizes visible scarring and requires the surgeon to have a thorough knowledge of the nasal anatomy. The other type, called open rhinoplasty, uses incisions on the outside of the nose for more direct access to the cartilage. This procedure, however, is more susceptible to visible scarring.

Is nose surgery painful?

Our staff is exceptionally well trained and experienced, committed to making every step of every procedure as comfortable and convenient as possible. Anesthesia is delivered by a full-time, experienced anesthesiologist, specializing in aesthetic surgery. Following surgery, pain is not severe and is readily relieved by oral pain medication, which is usually not required after the first day following the operation.

I am not local to San Francisco. How can you help me decided what procedure is suitable for me?

The best solution is to call our office and speak with one of our Patient Coordinators. They can explain how to photograph yourself and then send the photograph electronically or through the mail. After receiving the photograph, Dr. Owsley will assess your case and recommend a specific treatment plan.

What are the possible side effects of nose surgery?

Very rarely as a result of nose surgery, blood vessels may burst under the surface of the skin of the nose, causing tiny red marks to appear. Scarring is also possible but is dependant on the type of rhinoplasty performed. With closed rhinoplasty, scars are imperceptible because the incisions are made inside the nose. With open rhinoplasty, scarring may be visible. In some infrequent cases, patients have temporarily lost their sense of smell.

After the rhinoplasty surgery, will there be visible scars?

It depends on the type of rhinoplasty performed. Using the "closed" technique, the incisions are made inside the nose, making them invisible. The "open" rhinoplasty technique uses incisions that are on the outside of the nose, increasing the chances of the scars being visible.

How long does recovery take from a rhinoplasty?

For a few days after nose surgery, you will invariably experience some bruising and swelling in the nose and eye area. This stage will pass. With each passing day, the bruising will diminish, and the swelling will decrease. Healing, however, is a gradual process, as there may be some minimal swelling for several months. There is also sometimes minor pain that can be controlled with doctor-recommended pain medication.

I don’t live near San Francisco. Do you offer referrals to any doctors in my area?
