The career of John Quincy Owsley, MD, FACS can be summed up as a lifelong quest for excellence. He graduated from Nashville, Tennessee's Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, following in the footsteps of both his father and grandfather. He received his post-graduate training at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center as a cosmetic surgeon and general surgeon.
After completing his residencies, Dr. Owsley was appointed to the faculty of University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and devoted his efforts to research and the teaching of plastic surgery. Dr. Owsley now practices as a cosmetic surgeon in the Bay Area of Northern California.
Because of his strong interest in the treatment of cleft lip and cleft palate deformities, Dr. Owsley developed new surgical techniques that were adopted worldwide. His work in the field won him recognition, and he was elected president of the American Cleft Palate Association.
Dr. Owsley has also taught many medical residents throughout his career. In 1990, he established a fellowship at the Aesthetic Surgery Institute of San Francisco, where a cosmetic surgeon spends a year in the Bay Area under Dr. Owsley's supervision, learning advanced techniques in facial plastic surgery.

In 1989, Dr. Owsley founded the Annual Esthetic Surgery Symposium, which was held annually in San Francisco until the symposium merged with the ongoing New Horizons Annual Symposium. Sponsored by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons Educational Foundation, the New Horizons Annual Symposium hosts 150 to 200 cosmetic surgeons each year. Dr. Owsley has been a member of this respected symposium's faculty for many years.
