Blepharoplasty ( Eyelid Surgery) at the Offices of Dr. John Owsley, MD, FACS

The thin, delicate skin surrounding the eyes easily falls prey to time. The upper eyelids droop, and pouches may develop in both the upper and lower lid areas. Because the appearance of the eyes is so important, so expressive a part of the face, you may appear fatigued or unhappy if time has taken a toll on the skin around your eyes. Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), performed at the Bay Area, San Francisco practice of Dr. John Owsley, can address signs of aging around the eyes for a fresh, rejuvenated look. Blepharoplasty may be performed as one component of a facelift, or it may be a separate procedure.

Your eyes are the focal point of your face — they're key to your facial appearance and expression. This may be why so many people desire eyelid surgery. Hearing someone say "my eyes make me look tired, but I'm just fine" is not uncommon. Blepharoplasty is an effective solution to remedying the appearance of perpetually tired or sad looking eyes and achieving a new, fresh, and invigorated appearance.

Dr. Owsley's Expertise

Dr. Owsley was the first surgeon to recognize the presence of excessive fat underlying the lateral brow, which can be recontoured to alter a heavy hooded appearance. His current approach to addressing signs of aging around the eyes includes correcting baggy skin under the lower eyelids through an incision on the inside of the lower lids that leaves no scar. Dr. Owsley also uses state-of-the-art blepharoplasty/eyelid surgery techniques at his San Francisco/Bay Area facility for elevating the outer corner of the eye to maintain or improve the appearance of the lid opening.

Dr. Owsley has written extensively about eyelid surgery for both textbooks and plastic surgery journals. A teaching video on his eyelid surgery technique is distributed by the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation.

Eyelid Surgery Options

Individuals who have bags underneath their eyes and/or folds of skin above the upper lids can benefit from lower and upper eyelid surgery procedures. However, Dr. Owsley can also address signs of aging with blepharoplasty procedures on just the upper lids or just the lower lids.

Eyelid surgery is a good option for people who want to look refreshed and healthy, but aren't ready for a full facelift. Eyelid surgery won't eliminate wrinkles around the eyes, including crow's feet. However, eyelid surgery can be combined with a forehead lift, rhinoplasty, or cheek implants (for example) for further refinement.
